The Rampal Thermal Power Plant in Bagerhat has set a new record by generating 1,321 megawatts of electricity from its two units, with the output being supplied directly to the national grid.

According to plant officials, Unit 1 was generating 656MW while Unit 2 was producing 665MW, taking the combined output to 1,321MW on Saturday afternoon.

The plant’s installed capacity is 1,320MW, comprising two 660MW units. The latest generation therefore exceeded its nominal capacity by 1MW.

The second unit had recently remained out of operation due to a mechanical fault. After the problem was repaired, the unit resumed generation and both units have since been operating continuously, officials said.

The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project was developed as a joint venture between Bangladesh and India through the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd (BIFPCL), formed by the Bangladesh Power Development Board and India’s NTPC.

The first 660MW unit entered commercial operation in December 2022, while the second unit achieved commercial operation in March 2024, according to the Power Division.
