The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the country from Thursday morning due to an active monsoon, with the adverse weather expected to persist for the next 48 hours.
In a special weather bulletin issued on Thursday, the Met Office said all eight divisions are likely to be affected.
According to the duty meteorologist, heavy rainfall is expected in many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. Rainfall between 44 mm and 88 mm in 24 hours is classified as heavy, while more than 88 mm is considered very heavy rainfall.
The Met Office warned that the active monsoon could trigger very heavy downpours in some parts of the country.
The prolonged rainfall is expected to increase the risk of severe waterlogging in low-lying areas of Dhaka and Chattogram, potentially disrupting normal life and traffic.
The bulletin also warned of a high risk of landslides in the hilly areas of the Chattogram region due to the continuous rain. Residents living on hill slopes and in other vulnerable areas have been advised to move to safer locations.
Meanwhile, around 30,000 people have already been stranded by flooding in parts of the Chattogram division, while the death toll from rain-triggered landslides in Cox’s Bazar has risen to 19.
