Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat today called for “zero compromise” on aviation safety, stressing faster emergency response, coordinated rescue operations and strict enforcement of security protocols.
“Our goal must be: zero compromise on aviation safety,” he said while addressing the Airport Emergency Exercise 2026 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).
The exercise simulated an aircraft fire to assess the ability of emergency teams to respond quickly, evacuate passengers and crew and coordinate rescue and firefighting operations.
Senior officials from the ministry, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), Fire Service and other agencies attended the exercise.
Millat said fire safety and emergency response capabilities were essential for developing a modern and safe aviation hub.
Recalling a fire at the airport’s import cargo complex in October last year, he said the incident caused extensive damage and affected the country’s image. Ensuring aviation safety and security is therefore a top priority for the government, he said.
The minister said the first few minutes after an airport accident or fire are critical. He instructed agencies to further reduce response times and ensure immediate coordination among firefighters, airport operators, security personnel and medical teams.
He said memorandums of understanding could be signed with relevant agencies to strengthen crisis management.
Millat said a National Civil Aviation Security Committee had been formed as the highest policymaking body for aviation security. He also urged officials to prepare for an upcoming International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) audit.
Security rules must apply equally to everyone, including VIPs and CIPs, he said.
He also announced plans to install an anti-drone system at HSIA following unauthorised drone flights during the cargo fire.
The minister urged officials to implement recommendations from the exercise and conduct regular drills to strengthen emergency preparedness and passenger safety.
