PANCHAGARH: Police have arrested former Panchagarh-1 lawmaker Naimuzzaman Bhuiyan, also known as Mukta, from his home in Kazipara area of Panchagarh Sadar upazila.

He was arrested at around 6:15 a.m. on Tuesday in connection with a case filed over the alleged murder and disappearance of Al Amin, a 21-year-old rickshaw puller who went missing after participating in the student-led mass movement.

Naimuzzaman was produced before the court at around 9 a.m. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Panchagarh, Mosharraf Hossain, ordered that he be sent to jail.

The arrest was confirmed by Mirza Nazmul Islam Kajal, public prosecutor of the Panchagarh District Judge Court, and Khan Md Shahriar, inspector of the court police.

Naimuzzaman is a vice-president of the Panchagarh district unit of the Awami League, whose activities have been banned. Several cases have been filed against him with Panchagarh Sadar Police Station.

According to court and police sources, Al Amin’s father, Md Monu, filed the case at Panchagarh Sadar Police Station on November 10, 2024. The case named 19 people as accused, including former Railways Minister and former Panchagarh-2 MP Nurul Islam and Naimuzzaman Bhuiyan. Another 150 unidentified people were also named as accused.

Panchagarh Sadar Police Station Investigation Inspector Ashish Kumar Shil said Naimuzzaman had been absconding for a long time. After receiving information that he was at his Kazipara residence early Tuesday, police conducted a raid and arrested him at around 6:15 a.m.

He was later taken to court, where the magistrate ordered that he be sent to jail.
