The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has ordered Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) to ensure proper medical treatment for former state minister Kamal Ahmed Majumder, who reportedly fractured a bone in his lower back after falling while in custody.

The tribunal issued the order on Tuesday after hearing a petition filed by his lawyer.

During the hearing, lawyer Md Shahidur Rahman told the tribunal that Majumder had suffered the fracture after a fall and required urgent surgery. He also cited his advanced age and diabetes, saying BMU currently lacked adequate facilities to perform the procedure.

The defence sought permission to have Majumder treated at private Evercare Hospital.

The prosecution said it had no objection to appropriate medical treatment but noted that Evercare did not have arrangements to accommodate a detainee. It therefore supported treatment at BMU.

After hearing both sides, the tribunal directed BMU to provide Majumder with the necessary medical care.

Majumder, a former state minister for industries and a member of the Awami League, is currently standing trial in a case involving alleged crimes against humanity during the July-August 2024 uprising. The party’s activities are currently banned.

The case involves 19 accused, including former lawmaker Md Elias Uddin Mollah. According to the prosecution’s allegations, more than 50 unarmed students and members of the public were shot dead in the Mirpur-10 roundabout and parts of Pallabi on July 18-19 and Aug. 4-5, 2024.

The allegations further state that members of law enforcement agencies and armed Awami League supporters were present in the areas during the incidents.

The Awami League government fell on Aug. 5, 2024, following the mass uprising.

Majumder was arrested by police in Gulshan, Dhaka, in October that year and has remained in custody since then.
