A Naogaon court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing a woman with a drill machine during an attempted robbery of her gold ornaments.
The convict was identified as Sohel Rana alias Hanif, son of Mofizul Haque of the Nayanandan Darogabari area under Tongibari Police Station in Munshiganj. He had been living in a rented house in the Pargati area of Naogaon town.
The court also fined him Tk 500,000. In default of payment, he will have to serve an additional two years in prison.
Judge Raju Ahmed of the Naogaon Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 and Special Tribunal-3 delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the prosecution, Kohinoor, wife of Israil Sheikh of the Pargati area, was alone at home on September 11, 2019, when Sohel entered the house.
Sohel was previously acquainted with the family and reportedly visited their home regularly. Taking advantage of Kohinoor being alone, he allegedly attacked her on the head with a drill machine, leaving her critically injured.
He then fled with cash and gold ornaments, according to the prosecution.
Local residents later rescued Kohinoor and took her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
