A 22-year-old Bangladeshi man has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Cyprus for the premeditated murder of compatriot Shahruar Ahmed Emon, also 22.
The Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court handed down the sentence on Tuesday after the accused, identified as Shahin Babu, admitted to the killing. He was also convicted of offences related to abduction and extortion.
According to court evidence, Shahin met Emon on a bus on June 7. Two days later, he bought a knife and subsequently lured Emon to Kofinou on the promise of a job paying €50 a day.
After taking Emon to an isolated area near a slaughterhouse, Shahin attacked him with a knife and then strangled him.
He covered the body with straw and took Emon’s mobile phone.
Shahin later used the phone to send messages to Emon’s father, who lives in Greece, demanding €35,000 in ransom and threatening to harm his son.
Police traced Emon’s final phone signal to Kofinou and arrested Shahin. He subsequently led investigators to the location where the body had been concealed.
Emon had arrived in Cyprus only a few months earlier on a student visa to pursue higher education. He was from Narsingdi’s Raipura and was also working part-time while studying.
