US President Donald Trump has blamed France’s ongoing student protests on mass migration and what he described as an attempt by Islam to take over the country.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump said the unrest in France was “nothing less than out of control mass migration” and claimed that the issue was about “Islam wanting to take over” France.
Trump’s remarks came as students across France continued protests over deteriorating conditions in high schools.
Hundreds of schools have reportedly been affected by blockades since late September, with protesters raising concerns about poorly maintained buildings, teacher shortages and inequalities between schools.
The demonstrations have also seen sporadic clashes with security forces, while around 250,000 people took part in protests across France on Tuesday, according to AFP.
Trump has repeatedly criticised European immigration policies and has made migration a central theme of his political rhetoric.
His latest comments linked the French protests directly to Islam and migration, although the protesters themselves have focused primarily on education-related grievances.
The remarks are likely to intensify debate in Europe and the United States over immigration, Islam and cultural integration, particularly ahead of the US midterm elections.
