More than 3,000 residents of Japan Garden City in Mohammadpur have been facing severe hardship after a prolonged power outage caused by a faulty transformer at the housing complex’s own 33kV substation.

As of Thursday afternoon, neither the Japan Garden City authorities nor the flat owners’ management committee had taken effective steps to restore electricity.

Following reports of the outage, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education and Dhaka-13 MP Bobby Hajjaj directed the relevant authorities to take immediate measures to resolve the crisis.

According to officials, the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC) has continued supplying electricity through its 33kV line up to the housing complex.

However, power distribution within the complex has remained suspended due to the failure of its privately managed transformer.

DPDC said it is prepared to provide a transformer on a temporary rental basis to ease the residents’ suffering and has already instructed the relevant officials to proceed.

Bobby Hajjaj said prolonged disruption to essential services was unacceptable and urged the Japan Garden City management committee to take immediate action to restore electricity for residents.
