The UN Human Rights Council has unanimously adopted a Bangladesh-led resolution on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the promotion and protection of human rights.
The resolution, titled “Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights”, was adopted during the council’s ongoing 63rd session in Geneva.
Bangladesh presented the draft on behalf of a core group comprising Algeria, Austria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Greece, Guyana, Kuwait and Nepal.
The Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN in Geneva announced the development in a statement on Tuesday.
The resolution seeks to promote a balanced, forward-looking and human rights-centred approach to AI. It recognises the technology’s potential to drive development and innovation while addressing its growing impact on the promotion and protection of human rights.
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva, serving as the penholder, first presented the initiative on behalf of the core group at a Human Rights Council pre-session meeting in August 2026.
Bangladesh subsequently worked closely with other members of the core group and held open, inclusive and constructive consultations with various delegations and stakeholders.
While introducing the draft, Bangladesh said AI was becoming a powerful driver of rapid transformation in societies and institutions.
It stressed that the development and use of AI must remain consistent with international human rights law, with human dignity and people’s ability to make their own decisions kept at the centre of consideration.
The resolution also places emphasis on development, inclusion, international cooperation, capacity-building and meaningful participation of developing countries.
It calls for broader access to the benefits of emerging technologies, particularly through international cooperation, technical assistance, knowledge and scientific exchanges, access to technology and capacity-building for developing countries.
The unanimous adoption of the resolution is being viewed as an important step in the Human Rights Council’s discussions on the rapidly evolving relationship between AI and human rights.
It also highlights Bangladesh’s role in multilateral diplomacy and its engagement in international discussions on emerging global issues.
