A court in Mymensingh has sentenced three brothers to death and 10 others to life imprisonment for the murder of a farmer in Nandail.
Mymensingh Additional Sessions Judge Court-1 Judge Md Samsuddin pronounced the verdict on Wednesday, finding the accused guilty of killing farmer Shafiqul Islam Sabi.
The death-row convicts are Mozammel Haque Swapan, Md Apon Mia and Ripon Mia alias Jibu. All three are brothers. Ripon is absconding.
The 10 others sentenced to life imprisonment are Abu Bakar Siddique, Kanchan Mia, Rubel, Parvez, Mofazzal Hossain, Kashid, Al-Amin, Sumon Mia, Nayan Mia and Asadul.
Each was also fined Tk 50,000, with an additional one year in prison in default of payment. Asadul is also absconding.
According to the case details, Sabi was hacked to death on February 25, 2015, following a dispute over land.
He was attacked with local weapons while sitting at a clothing shop near Char Velamari ferry ghat in Nandail.
His brother Rafiqul Islam later filed a murder case against 13 named accused and 10–12 unidentified people.
After a lengthy trial, during which 16 witnesses testified and were cross-examined, the court found the accused guilty and handed down the sentences.
