The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved two projects worth a total of Tk1,813.28 crore to improve infrastructure in Rangpur City Corporation.

Of the amount, Tk1,602.79 crore has been allocated for the development of key infrastructure in the city, while Tk210.49 crore will be spent on rehabilitating damaged roads.

The projects were approved at an ECNEC meeting held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Secretariat on Wednesday. Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Tarique Rahman chaired the meeting.

The meeting approved 13 projects involving a total cost of Tk16,207.55 crore. Of these, 10 were new projects, two were revised projects and one involved an extension of the implementation period.

The main Rangpur City Corporation infrastructure project will cost Tk1,602.79 crore. The government will provide Tk1,121.95 crore, while the city corporation will contribute Tk480.84 crore from its own funds.

The Tk210.49-crore road rehabilitation project is expected to help improve uninterrupted road connectivity within the city.

Rangpur City Corporation Administrator Mahfuz-Un-Nabi Don confirmed the approvals, saying the prime minister was committed to the development of Rangpur.

He said the two projects would help improve road connectivity and enhance the quality of civic services in the city.

Residents of Rangpur have long been demanding improvements to roads, drainage and other urban infrastructure. The main development project, involving around Tk1,600 crore, had been awaiting approval at the Planning Commission.
