A court in Tangail has sentenced two young men to life imprisonment for the rape of a child, also fining each of them Tk 300,000.

The court ordered that the convicts serve an additional three years in prison if they fail to pay the fines.

Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Dr Abdul Majid delivered the verdict on Wednesday afternoon in the presence of the accused. They were subsequently sent to Tangail District Jail.

The convicts were identified as Arif, 23, son of Nazrul Islam, and Rubel, 23, son of Aynal. Both are from Brahmanbari village in Madhupur upazila of Tangail.

According to Public Prosecutor Advocate Khandaker Md Rokunuzzaman, the victim had married her boyfriend against her family’s wishes.

On September 4, 2024, she allegedly went outside her home around midnight to meet her husband.

The prosecution said the two accused restrained her husband by tying him to a post and then sexually assaulted the victim.

Six days after the incident, the victim herself filed a case with Madhupur Police Station.

Police submitted a charge sheet before the court on November 14, 2024.

After examining the evidence and witness testimony, the tribunal found the two accused guilty and sentenced each to life imprisonment with hard labour, along with the fine and additional prison term in default of payment.

Advocate Haradhan Chandra Singh represented the accused in the case.
