BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has expressed hope that the newly formed Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation (BRTWF) committee will take effective steps to curb illegal activities and extortion on roads and help end what he described as “mafia” practices in the transport sector.

Rizvi made the remarks on Thursday morning while speaking to reporters after the new committee members, led by BNP leader Nazim Uddin, paid floral tributes at the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

He said the transport sector would be reorganised through new ideas and initiatives.

“The sector will be brought out of its long-standing stagnation, made more compliant with the law and transformed into a model of passenger service,” Rizvi said.

He also said political leaders would be able to end what he described as 17 years of disorder if they were given the responsibility of running the country.
