A court in Bogura has sentenced a man to a total of 60 years in prison for raping two six-year-old children in Kahaloo upazila.
The court sentenced Nur Islam, 40, to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment in each of two separate cases. It also fined him Tk50,000 in each case, totalling Tk1 lakh.
Bogura Children and Women Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Maruf Hossain pronounced the verdict around 11:30am on Thursday. The accused was present in court when the verdict was delivered.
According to the prosecution, Nur Islam, a resident of Arola Ashrayan Project in Paikar Union, called the two children to his home on March 12, 2025, and allegedly raped them after luring them with food and money. He also threatened to kill them if they disclosed the incident.
The families learned about the incident the following day after one child developed a fever and the other suffered severe bleeding.
The mother of one of the children later filed a case with Kahaloo Police Station. Police rescued the children and sent them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for treatment. Nur Islam was subsequently arrested in a joint operation by police and the Detective Branch.
After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court. During the trial, the prosecution produced 10 witnesses. After examining the evidence and medical reports, the court handed down the sentences.
Prosecutor Md Abdul Mannan confirmed the verdict, saying the sentences will be served consecutively, meaning the second sentence will begin after the first is completed.
He added that, as directed by the court, Tk1 lakh in fines will be recovered by selling the accused’s movable and immovable property and given to the victims’ families.
