Bangladesh, Indonesia discuss easier visas, trade

Indonesian Vice Foreign Minister Muhammad Anis Matta met Prime Minister’s Office adviser and spokesperson Mahdi Amin on Thursday to discuss simplifying visa and travel procedures and boosting bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Indonesia.

The meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, BSS reported.

The two sides discussed strengthening people-to-people ties, expanding educational cooperation and increasing collaboration in the energy sector.

They also placed particular emphasis on improving facilities, amenities and safety for the large number of Bangladeshi tourists travelling to Indonesia.

The meeting focused on simplifying visa procedures, reinstating visa-on-arrival facilities for Bangladeshi citizens and launching direct flights between the two countries.

The two sides also exchanged views on increasing bilateral trade and creating opportunities for more Indonesian companies to invest and operate in Bangladesh.

They discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, tourism and education, as well as strengthening ties between businesses and entrepreneurs of the two countries.

Potential areas for increased trade included ready-made garments, jute, agricultural products and palm oil. The sides also discussed expanding exports of halal products.

The meeting also explored ways to increase Indonesian investment in Bangladesh and deepen economic and strategic cooperation.

Both sides agreed to strengthen multifaceted cooperation and further advance ties based on shared Muslim heritage.

Indonesian Ambassador to Bangladesh Listyowati and Bangladesh Ambassador to Indonesia Md Abul Hasan Mridha attended the meeting.
