Bangladeshi citizens travelling abroad can now buy up to US$3,000 in foreign currency at a time from licensed money changers against their personal travel entitlement, up from the previous limit of $2,000.

Bangladesh Bank issued a circular on Thursday, raising the limit for foreign currency notes and coins sold by licensed money changers to outbound Bangladeshi travellers.

The circular, signed by Munira Islam, director of the central bank’s Foreign Exchange Policy Department-2, was sent to all licensed money changers and authorised dealers in foreign exchange.

Under an FE Circular No. 31 issued on November 19, 2024, licensed money changers were allowed to sell foreign currency notes and coins worth up to $2,000 against a Bangladeshi citizen’s annual personal travel quota.

Under the new decision, a licensed money changer can sell up to $3,000 at a time against the applicable annual travel entitlement of an outbound Bangladeshi citizen.

If a customer has any unused portion of their travel quota, the remaining entitlement may be provided in notes and coins of other freely convertible or usable foreign currencies, subject to the customer’s remaining quota and the availability of the currency.

Bangladesh Bank said all other existing rules and regulations applicable to licensed money changers would remain unchanged.

Money changers have also been instructed to inform their customers about the revised limit.
