A Russian glide bomb strike on two passenger buses in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk killed at least 33 people and injured 18 others on Thursday, Ukrainian authorities said.

The attack took place at around 10am local time as the buses were travelling along a street in the frontline city in Donetsk region.

The strike also damaged a residential building and set two passenger buses on fire.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service later raised the death toll to 33.

Rescue workers evacuated the injured and extinguished fires at the scene.

The attack involved a Russian UMPB D-30 SN guided bomb, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Donetsk regional officials accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting civilian transport, while Moscow had not immediately commented on the strike.

Following the attack, authorities suspended public transport services in Kramatorsk and neighbouring Sloviansk, citing the deteriorating security situation.

Kramatorsk is one of the key Ukrainian-held cities in the Donetsk region and forms part of the country’s heavily defended eastern “fortress belt.” Russian forces have intensified drone and guided-bomb attacks on the area in recent weeks.
