Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice-President Abu Sadiq Kayem has accused the city corporations of failing to take effective measures to prevent dengue, leaving city residents at risk.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration of a public awareness and mosquito control campaign organised by the Shahjahanpur East unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka South city unit on Thursday afternoon.
Sadiq Kayem alleged that the government’s decision to appoint politically affiliated and allegedly inexperienced administrators to Dhaka South and North city corporations and other local government bodies had contributed to the situation.
He said Jamaat-e-Islami was conducting mosquito control drives and distributing protective materials because, according to him, there had been no effective government initiative to prevent dengue in Dhaka or elsewhere in the country.
“The people are having to bear the consequences of the government’s failures,” he said, alleging that the government had failed to achieve anything beyond corruption, irregularities and politicisation since taking office.
Sadiq also urged Dhaka residents to elect honest, competent and efficient leaders free from corruption as mayor and ward councillors in the upcoming Dhaka South City Corporation election.
He said people would benefit if the country were governed under Jamaat-e-Islami’s leadership, claiming that the party would establish justice and ensure people’s fundamental rights.
The programme was chaired by Shahjahanpur East Thana Jamaat Ameer Mohammad Shariful Islam and conducted by its Secretary Md Anwar Hossain.
Dhaka South city unit Social Welfare Secretary Shaheen Ahmed Khan and Shahjahanpur Thana Social Welfare Council President Mosharraf Hossain Chanchal attended as special guests.
Local figures, including Md Shafique Molla and Sohel, also spoke at the programme. Thana working committee members Abdul Khalek, Shahadat Hossain and Abu Taher were present.
Following the meeting, Jamaat activists conducted a mosquito control drive in various lanes and bylanes, beginning in the Shahjahanpur Jheel Mosque area. Sadiq Kayem also distributed leaflets among local residents to raise awareness about dengue prevention.
