The United States has sought Bangladesh’s support for its candidates in upcoming elections to the United Nations and its affiliated agencies, while informing Dhaka of its decision to increase financial assistance for Rohingya refugees.

US Chargé d’Affaires Eric Gillan conveyed the requests during a courtesy meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday.

The two sides also discussed a range of issues, including human trafficking and the US Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, energy—particularly liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)—education and training, and the Fulbright Commission.

Gillan said the US government had decided to increase its financial assistance for the Rohingya refugees. He also sought Bangladesh’s support for US candidates in upcoming elections to the UN and various UN-related bodies.

The US diplomat also asked about the recent visit by a high-level Bangladeshi delegation to Silicon Valley.

Shama Obaed welcomed the decision to increase US assistance for the Rohingya and thanked the US government for the support.

Regarding the UN elections, she assured Gillan that Bangladesh would duly consider the requests for support for US candidates.

On the Silicon Valley visit, the state minister said the delegation’s trip to California had been successful, with several productive meetings held with executives of major technology companies, startups and other firms in the technology sector.
