Saudi Arabia’s air defence forces intercepted ballistic missiles launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels towards the capital, Riyadh, before they could hit their intended targets. However, falling debris from one of the missiles damaged a school and a medical clinic in the city.
Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence confirmed the damage on Thursday, October 8, saying missile debris had caused property damage to civilian facilities and emergency service infrastructure.
In a statement, the agency said the missiles had been launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels and that authorities were taking the necessary measures to respond to such attacks. It did not specify whether anyone had been killed or injured in the incident.
The Iran-backed Houthis have intensified their attacks on Saudi Arabia in recent weeks. Hours before the interception over Riyadh on Thursday, the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s military said it had intercepted two ballistic missiles targeting Riyadh and another aimed at Khamis Mushait.
Earlier on Wednesday, attacks targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha International Airport. According to Saudi aviation authorities, the attacks killed three people and injured 36 others.
