A gang of armed robbers shot a bKash distributor’s accounts manager and fled with approximately Tk 3 crore after intercepting a private car carrying cash in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Friday evening.
The robbery took place around 6:30pm in Karnapur, along the Sreepur-Gosinga regional road, when 10 to 12 assailants riding motorcycles stopped the vehicle.
According to information provided by the company, the attackers smashed the car’s windows with weapons, including Chinese axes, before shooting accounts manager Himel with a pistol. They then took three plastic sacks containing the cash and fled.
Two other employees travelling in the vehicle—driver Lal Mia and area manager Farhad—were also injured in the incident.
Himel was initially taken to Sreepur Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital because of the severity of his injuries.
Mostafizur Rahman, manager of Bhaluka Channel Enterprise Limited’s Sreepur operation, a bKash distributor based in Maona Chowrasta, said the company had arranged the cash transfer to meet increased demand for cash withdrawals, particularly for garment workers’ salary payments.
With banks closed on Friday, the company transferred bKash balance to Hazrat Ali Munshi, a distributor in Narsingdi Sadar, and collected Tk 4 crore in cash. The money was packed into three plastic sacks and transported in a private car.
The vehicle was intercepted on its return journey through Karnapur, where the attackers allegedly seized around Tk 3 crore of the Tk 4 crore being carried.
Mohammad Shahinur Alam, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said police visited the scene and launched an investigation.
Investigators are collecting evidence and recording statements from the injured to identify those involved, recover the stolen money and take legal action, he added.
The robbers’ identities and whereabouts were not immediately known.
