Police have identified auto-rickshaw driver Sumon Mia as the man who allegedly raped and murdered 15-year-old schoolgirl Jannatul Tajmin in Cumilla.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Pankaj Barua disclosed the findings at a press conference at the district police superintendent’s office on Saturday.
According to police, Sumon was arrested at his brother’s house in Chattogram on Friday in connection with the murder.
Police said Sumon confessed during questioning to raping Tajmin.
Investigators alleged that he strangled her with a gamcha before pressing her head into the mud to ensure her death.
Tajmin, a Class VII student at Farida Bidyayatan in Cumilla city, was travelling in the CNG-run auto-rickshaw when the incident occurred.
Her body was recovered from a paddy field in Jagatpur village under Lalmai upazila on Thursday morning.
Her father, Abdul Alim, filed a murder case with Lalmai Police Station against unidentified suspects.
Police said the investigation identified Sumon as the alleged perpetrator.
