Rabab Fatima made UN special envoy to Afghanistan

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has nominated Bangladeshi diplomat Rabab Fatima as his Special Envoy to Afghanistan.

According to Afghanistan-based Ariana News, Guterres has already submitted her nomination to the UN Security Council for approval.

Citing diplomatic sources, the report said the Security Council is expected to make a decision on the nomination soon.

If confirmed, Fatima will succeed Roza Otunbayeva, whose term ended in September last year.

Fatima has been serving as the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) since June 2022.

Previously, she served as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and as the country’s Ambassador to Japan.
