Elon Musk’s SpaceX is preparing to expand beyond satellite-based internet services and enter the US mobile telecommunications market, seeking to combine its Starlink satellite network with ground-based infrastructure.
The company has acquired up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum in the nationwide 800 MHz band from Grain Management, marking a key step towards expanding mobile coverage across the United States.
Musk has described the spectrum acquisition as a crucial step towards providing more comprehensive mobile connectivity, potentially allowing users to access Starlink-powered services both indoors and outdoors.
Under the proposed network architecture, Starlink satellites will provide connectivity in outdoor and remote areas, while the newly acquired 800 MHz spectrum will help improve coverage inside buildings. The frequency band is supported by a wide range of existing smartphones.
Starlink Mobile will also use its previously acquired global 2 GHz mid-band spectrum to increase network capacity and support high-speed internet services.
SpaceX plans to combine satellite connectivity with ground-based infrastructure, including femtocells, to deliver 5G mobile services. The rollout will depend on the necessary regulatory approvals and infrastructure development.
The move could put Starlink in more direct competition with major US telecommunications operators, including AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Its satellite technology could give it an advantage in rural and remote areas where conventional mobile networks struggle to provide reliable coverage.
SpaceX has also received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch 15,000 next-generation satellites, supporting its broader ambitions to expand satellite-based communications.
The spectrum deal involving Grain Management follows SpaceX’s efforts to secure additional frequencies for its mobile ambitions, including arrangements connected to T-Mobile.
By combining satellite and terrestrial networks, SpaceX aims to broaden mobile coverage and reduce connectivity gaps. However, the success of its plans will depend on regulatory clearance, network deployment, service quality and its ability to compete with established operators in the US telecommunications market.
