A Dhaka court on Monday placed two retired army officers on a four-day remand each in a case involving allegations of conspiracy against the government, incitement to violence, illegal financing and spreading disinformation on social media.
The accused are retired Lieutenant Kazi Gulshan Ara, 43, and retired Lieutenant Colonel Debashish, 47.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order after hearing the prosecution and defence on October 12.
The Detective Branch (DB) of police had sought seven days of remand for each of the accused for interrogation in the case filed with Pallabi Police Station. The court granted four days of remand and rejected their bail petitions.
According to the investigation officer, the two were allegedly involved in creating and circulating digital content through WhatsApp groups and online platforms.
Police also alleged that they had links with former army chief General Aziz Ahmed, a former home minister and other fugitive leaders in an alleged attempt to revive the Awami League.
The allegations are part of the ongoing investigation and have not been established as proven facts in court.
The two officers were arrested during separate drives in Dhaka’s Pallabi and Banani DOHS areas on Sunday night.
The case was filed under provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Cyber Security law, along with allegations of sedition.
