Grameen Kalyan left no stone unturned to evade taxes: HC

The High Court has described Grameen Kalyan’s actions as a “classic example of tax evasion”, saying the organisation left no stone unturned in attempting to deprive the National Board of Revenue (NBR) of its legitimate revenue.

In its full verdict released on Monday, the court rejected two writ petitions filed by Grameen Kalyan, challenging an income tax demand of Tk 666 crore for the 2012–13 to 2016–17 tax years.

The court observed that the organisation had prolonged a settled matter in an attempt to evade taxes and deprive the government of its rightful revenue.

The High Court directed the NBR and other concerned authorities to take necessary steps to recover the unpaid taxes in accordance with the law as expeditiously as possible.

Grameen Kalyan, a non-profit organisation founded by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has said it plans to challenge the verdict before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
