A parliamentary committee has called for stronger security and improved management at Chattogram Port following reports of cargo-laden containers going missing, while urging faster disposal of auctionable containers and vehicles that have remained at the port for years.
The issues were discussed at the fifth meeting of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad’s Committee on Government Assurances and Public Undertakings on Monday at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The meeting was chaired by committee chairman and Chief Whip of Parliament Nurul Islam Moni.
According to a press release from the Parliament Secretariat, the committee reviewed the financial management, operational activities and audit reports of the Chattogram, Mongla and Payra port authorities.
Committee members stressed the need to improve transparency and operational efficiency, prevent the misuse of public funds and resolve long-standing audit objections. They also called for measures to ensure greater accountability among the relevant authorities.
Security concerns at Chattogram Port came under discussion following a recent newspaper report alleging that cargo-filled containers had repeatedly gone missing, raising questions about the port’s security arrangements and management.
The committee also emphasised stronger coordination between the Customs Department and port authorities to resolve operational bottlenecks.
Members called for the prompt disposal of auctionable containers and vehicles and wider use of digital management systems to improve transparency and streamline port operations.
The meeting also reviewed dredging activities, project implementation and related audit objections at Mongla and Payra ports.
Committee members stressed the importance of achieving the intended outcomes of these projects and ensuring the proper use of public funds.
Among those attending were committee members and whips Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu and Md Akhtaruzzaman Mia, as well as Mosammat Tahsina Rushdir, Khondaker Abu Ashfaq, Mohammad Koyser Ahmed, Biswas Jahangir Alam, Mustafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, Mohammad Nazibur Rahman and Mohammad Kamal Hossain.
