DHAKA, Oct 12: Around 10,000 members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be deployed across the country from October 16 to 22 to ensure security during Sharadiya Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community.
Lt Col Md Mahbub Murshed Rahman, director of operations at BGB Headquarters, informed on Monday.
He said BGB had adopted an integrated security plan to ensure that the festival is celebrated in a peaceful and festive atmosphere.
The plan includes regular patrols, intelligence surveillance and close coordination with local administration, police and Puja celebration committees.
Special emphasis will be placed on identifying potential risks in advance, monitoring rumours and communal incitement, and responding swiftly to any untoward incident.
BGB will also provide security support at 2,727 Puja mandaps located within eight kilometres of the border and in areas near battalion headquarters.
Temporary camps will be set up where necessary to facilitate rapid patrols and provide security support in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
Regarding deployment in Dhaka, Rahman said the scope and responsibilities of BGB personnel would be determined by government directives and the requirements of the relevant authorities.
He added that BGB would remain ready to coordinate with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and local administration to conduct patrols, secure key locations and respond promptly to emergencies.
Rahman described Durga Puja as an expression of Bangladesh’s longstanding tradition of communal harmony and mutual respect, assuring that BGB would remain prepared to help Hindu devotees celebrate the festival safely and peacefully.
