Thieves broke into the ancestral home of renowned playwright and actor Mamunur Rashid in Tangail, breaking open three steel almirahs and ransacking household belongings.

However, it is yet to be confirmed what items, if any, were stolen from the house.

Mamunur Rashid’s sister, Afia Khan, also known as Rosie, filed a written complaint with Tangail Sadar Police Station on Monday afternoon over the incident.

The theft reportedly took place between 9am and 5pm on October 10 at the family’s house in the Palashtali area of Tangail town.

Afia Khan lives in the house but was in Dhaka at the time. Before leaving for Dhaka a few days earlier, she had entrusted the house’s care to Shafiqul Rahman, an acquaintance of the family.

According to the complaint, Shafiqul locked the house and left around 9am on October 10, when everything appeared normal. Upon returning at around 5pm, he found the lock on the veranda grille broken.

Inside, he found belongings scattered across the floor, three steel almirahs damaged and a wooden almirah left open.

The almirahs contained valuables belonging to Mamunur Rashid and his eight siblings. As Afia was in Dhaka and other family members were unavailable, the family has yet to determine what may have been stolen.

Afia said she was unsure whether the incident was a straightforward theft or whether it had been motivated by something else.

Mamunur Rashid said he learned from his siblings that intruders had broken into their ancestral home in Tangail and ransacked the contents of the almirahs.
