The call was made at the committee’s seventh meeting, chaired by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Cabinet Room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday.

According to a press release, the meeting discussed ways to secure broader political consensus on implementing the July National Charter and ensure opposition participation in the constitutional amendment process.

Participants emphasised the need for necessary constitutional reforms to meet public expectations and fulfil commitments under the charter.

Teachers who contributed to the July mass uprising, university vice-chancellors, prominent educationists and constitutional experts attended the meeting and presented their views and proposals on constitutional reform.

The meeting also considered the proposal to introduce an Upper House of Parliament in line with Bangladesh’s state structure, including possible arrangements to ensure representation of different social and professional groups in the proposed chamber.

Committee members reviewed the opinions and recommendations submitted by academics and constitutional experts on implementing the July National Charter and undertaking the necessary amendments.
