NETRAKONA: A woman has been sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment for filing a false rape case that led to a man being jailed in Barhatta upazila of Netrakona.

The court also fined her Tk 5,000, with an additional three months in prison if she fails to pay the fine.

Judge AKM Emdadul Haque of the Netrokona Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.

According to court and case records, the woman filed a rape case against her neighbour, Kamal Uddin, on April 9, 2008, claiming she was eight months pregnant. Police subsequently arrested Kamal, who spent nearly two months in jail.

After the woman gave birth, a DNA test was conducted on August 23, 2009, to determine the child’s paternity. The test results did not support her claim. Following lengthy judicial proceedings, the court acquitted Kamal of the rape charge on January 23, 2019.

Kamal later filed a countercase against the woman on January 4, 2020, seeking legal recourse over the false accusation. After examining the evidence, the court found the woman guilty and sentenced her to one year of rigorous imprisonment and a fine.
