A man died after being beaten by a mob over alleged derogatory remarks about Allah, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the Holy Quran and the Prophet’s companions on Facebook in Debhata upazila of Satkhira.

The deceased, Wahiduzzaman Shamim, was the son of the late Shamsur Rahman of Barashanta village in Debhata.

According to police and local sources, anger spread in the area after some of Shamim’s alleged comments and conversations circulated on social media.

Local sources said several people visited his house on Monday night, when he reportedly attempted suicide by consuming poison. His brothers rescued him and admitted him to Sabur Doctor’s chamber in Kuliya.

On Tuesday evening, tensions escalated in the Parulia and Kuliya areas. An agitated crowd allegedly went to the chamber and beat Shamim. He was taken to the upazila health complex, where he was reportedly assaulted again.

As his condition deteriorated, Shamim was taken under police escort to Satkhira Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment at around 11pm on Tuesday. He later died while undergoing treatment.

Debhata Police Station Officer-in-Charge HM Shaheen said local people had beaten Shamim over allegations of hurting religious sentiments. Police rescued him and took him to the upazila health complex before transferring him to Satkhira.

The incident is under investigation, and further details will be disclosed after the inquiry, he said.

Police duty officer ASI Ibrahim confirmed Shamim’s death, adding that his body was at Satkhira Medical College Hospital and further legal action was under way.
