Two children were killed after being swept away by strong currents caused by flash floods from hill runoff in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram district.
The incidents occurred in separate areas of Baharchhara Union on Friday (July 10) morning.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Ashik, 8, son of expatriate Kamal Uddin of South Ilsha village in Baharchhara Union, and Miraj, 6, a resident of Ratnapur area in the same union.
According to local sources, the two children had stepped into the yards of their respective homes in the morning when they were swept away by the powerful current of hill runoff. Locals later rescued them and took them to a private hospital in Gunagari, Banshkhali, where the attending physician declared them dead.
Banshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Robiul Haque said, “We have received reports that two children died after being swept away by hill runoff. The incident is deeply tragic. Necessary legal procedures are being taken.”
