Eight bags belonging to Rajshahi Division’s cricket team have gone missing while being transported from Dhaka to Rajshahi after the team’s second-round match in the National Cricket League (NCL).
The missing luggage contained players’ passports, iPhones, US dollars, cash, clothing and sports equipment, according to a complaint filed with Rajshahi Metropolitan Police’s Rajpara Police Station.
The players returned to Rajshahi by air on Wednesday morning after playing against Khulna Division at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.
Meanwhile, a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) covered van carrying 54 pieces of luggage had left Dhaka for Rajshahi on Tuesday night.
The eight bags were found missing when the luggage was unloaded at the team’s hotel in Rajshahi.
According to the complaint filed by cricketer SM Meherab Hossain, his missing bag contained his passport, an iPhone 15 Pro Max, US$300, Tk300,000 in cash and three perfumes worth around Tk70,000, along with clothing.
Another player, Abdul Kader, lost a specialised massage belt worth around Tk60,000, two pairs of shoes and clothing.
Pacer Mohor Sheikh Antar’s bag contained a JBL speaker worth around Tk30,000, while cricketer Mohammad Walid lost a bag of personal clothing. Four additional bags contained team clothing and sports equipment.
The van’s driver, Sajib Hossain, reportedly told police that he had stopped at a hotel on the Hatikumrul-Bonpara bypass for dinner while travelling to Rajshahi.
At around 5:30am on Wednesday, he noticed that the rear door of the vehicle was open while stopping at a filling station in Puthia. He closed the door and continued towards Rajshahi.
Rajshahi and Natore district police are jointly investigating the incident and working to recover the missing luggage. Police suspect the incident may have occurred along the highway in either district.
The loss has left the players concerned ahead of their next NCL match against Chattogram Division, scheduled to begin at Rajshahi Divisional Stadium on October 18.
Rajshahi Division team manager Touhid Tarek said the team was deeply upset by the incident and that police were working to recover the belongings.
