The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has resolved 257,227 disputes through alternative dispute resolution (ADR), out of 302,742 cases taken up for settlement.

A total of 502,181 people have benefited from the process, which settles disputes through negotiation or mediation outside the formal court system.

The figures were disclosed in a report on NLASO’s activities published on its website. The report provides statistics on ADR initiatives at both the pre-case and post-case stages.

According to the report, nearly 85% of the cases taken up for ADR have been resolved, highlighting the role of alternative mechanisms in settling disputes outside courts and helping litigants avoid lengthy judicial proceedings.

The report also said 1,663,620 people had received government-funded legal assistance during the same period.

The beneficiaries included litigants before the High Court Division and Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, people seeking justice in lower courts and labour courts across the country, and financially disadvantaged inmates in prisons.

The government provides legal assistance to ensure access to justice for people who cannot afford legal services. The programme is implemented by NLASO under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

ADR offers an alternative to lengthy court proceedings by resolving disputes through negotiation or mediation. The approach can help deliver quicker, more cost-effective solutions while saving litigants time and money.
