Customs intelligence officials have seized goods worth Tk1.13 crore, including Viagra, banned skin creams and foreign cigarettes, in separate anti-smuggling operations at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and Kamalapur Railway Foreign Post Office.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) said in a statement on Thursday that the raids were conducted on October 13 and 14, uncovering suspected smuggling routes involving air cargo, postal sorting centres and rail transport to Chattogram.
On October 14, officials seized around 55kg of medicines, including Viagra and insulin, from the baggage of a passenger arriving on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.
A day earlier, they recovered 7,787 pieces of banned Gouri cream and used laptops at Kamalapur, where the goods were allegedly being routed to Chattogram General Post Office by rail.
The two-day operations yielded 531 cartons of foreign cigarettes, 7,787 pieces of Gouri cream, 64.18kg of banned skin-whitening cream, 68kg of other cosmetics, 55.8kg of medicines, 100 grams of gold jewellery, 32 laptops, three mobile phones and 17 litres of alcoholic beverages.
The NBR said customs surveillance would continue to prevent smuggling, protect revenue and safeguard public health.
