Authorities have announced the indefinite closure of five garment factories in Uttara, Dhaka, citing workers’ strikes and alleged tensions at the workplaces.
A notice issued on Thursday (October 15) said all departments except security would remain closed under Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006.
The factories are Versatile Fashions (Pvt) Ltd, Umbrella Ltd, Nice Apparels Industries Ltd, Dazzling Dresses Ltd and Olio Apparels Ltd.
According to the notice, some workers staged strikes from October 12 to 14, reporting to work but refusing to perform their duties over various demands.
The notice alleged that the workers ignored management’s requests to resume work and created a tense and intimidating atmosphere.
It said the situation threatened the safety of officers and employees as well as factory property, making normal operations impossible.
All departments except security will remain closed until further notice. The authorities will announce the reopening date and time through a subsequent notice.
