DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has alleged that there is a deliberate attempt to implicate his party in the killing of Wahiduzzaman Shamim in Debhata, Satkhira.
In a statement sent to the media on Thursday, Porwar strongly condemned the attempt to blame Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami without a neutral investigation.
“We strongly protest attempts to blame Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for the death of Wahiduzzaman Shamim in Debhata, Satkhira, without any impartial investigation,” he said.
Porwar called for a fair, impartial and credible investigation to uncover the facts and bring those responsible to justice. He said attempts to link Jamaat to the incident before the investigation is completed are unacceptable.
He stressed that allegations against any individual or group must be dealt with through the law and the courts. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands or punish anyone through mob violence, he said, adding that Jamaat does not support such acts.
The Jamaat leader warned that blaming a political party or organisation without verifying the evidence could obscure the actual facts. He also criticised attempts to spread confusion for political purposes in connection with the incident.
Porwar urged law enforcement agencies to conduct an impartial investigation, identify the actual perpetrators and ensure justice for the victim’s family. He also called on the media and others concerned to act responsibly and refrain from publicising allegations against individuals or organisations without verification.
Wahiduzzaman Shamim, 38, was killed after being beaten repeatedly over allegations of blasphemy.
Police rescued him after the first assault and admitted him to a hospital. At around 8:40pm on Tuesday, October 13, a group of people entered the hospital, took him away and beat him again. He died on the way to another hospital in Satkhira as his condition deteriorated.
Shamim was a resident of Subarnabad village in Debhata upazila.
