Police have arrested two accused in the case filed over the mob killing of Wahiduzzaman Shamim in Debhata, Satkhira, following allegations of religious insult.

The main accused, Fazlul Haque Amini, remains at large, while efforts are underway to arrest the other suspects.

The arrestees are Moktar Hossain Mridha and Asadul Molla, said Debhata Police Station Officer-in-Charge HM Shaheen.

Moktar was arrested from Subarnabad village in Debhata upazila, while Asadul was detained around 9:30am on Friday from an area known as Nazir’s Gher. Both are named in the first information report (FIR), the police officer said.

Tensions erupted after an audio recording of a conversation between Shamim and his wife circulated on Facebook on Monday. Some people alleged that the recording contained derogatory remarks about religion, triggering unrest and an attempted attack on Shamim’s house.

Shamim was first beaten at a local market on Monday. On Tuesday afternoon, a group of people allegedly dragged him out of a local rural doctor’s chamber, where he was receiving treatment, and assaulted him again.

Police rescued him and admitted him to the upazila health complex. Later that night, a mob led by Fazlul Haque Amini allegedly attacked the hospital, seized Shamim and beat him again. Shamim died on the way to Satkhira Medical College Hospital.

His elder brother, Abdul Jalil, filed a murder case with Debhata Police Station on Thursday night. The case names 10 people and includes 200 to 250 unidentified suspects, with Amini listed as the prime accused.
