Protests rock Albania over corruption, rising living costs

Violent protests have erupted in Albania over allegations of corruption, a struggling education system and rising living costs, with controversy surrounding a planned luxury resort project by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, adding to public anger.

Clashes broke out between student-led demonstrators and police in the capital, Tirana, on Thursday (October 15). Prime Minister Edi Rama, however, has rejected calls for his resignation and remains determined to stay in office.

During the protests, demonstrators smashed windows of government buildings, set rubbish bins on fire, damaged traffic lights and erected road barricades. Police used tear gas, sound grenades and water cannons to disperse the crowds.

The clashes also forced the suspension of a parliamentary session. Security forces used batons against protesters in the central Skanderbeg Square, in front of tourists.

Demonstrations have also spread beyond the capital to Shkoder, Durres, Elbasan, Kukes and Vlora. Students and other citizens have joined the protests, voicing grievances over corruption, education and other government policies.

The European Union mission in Albania has called for restraint and urged all sides to resolve the crisis through constructive dialogue rather than violence.
