RANGPUR: Police have arrested Anima Zaman Proma, a leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in Rangpur.
She was arrested from New Engineerpara in Rangpur city around noon on Friday (October 16). She is accused of engaging in anti-government activities.
According to sources, Proma is the daughter of Ataur Zaman Babu, former president of Rangpur Metropolitan Awami Swechchhasebak League. On April 11, 2023, the central president and general secretary of Chhatra League appointed her general secretary of the organisation’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University unit.
Following the fall of the Awami League government in the July mass uprising, Proma went into hiding. Although she had not appeared in public, she was allegedly involved in secret anti-government activities and other efforts to create instability in the country.
Proma’s father, Ataur Zaman Babu, has been in jail for more than two years. He faces cases over allegations of assault and attempted murder during the July mass uprising.
Milon Chatterjee, inspector (investigation) at Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s Kotwali Police Station, confirmed the arrest. He said action would be taken against the arrested Chhatra League leader under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
He added that the police had received allegations that she was secretly carrying out activities for the banned organisation and engaging in anti-government activities.
After the completion of legal procedures, she was sent to jail through a court order on Friday evening.
