Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today ordered action against a doctor found smoking in his room during a surprise visit to Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute in Agargaon, Dhaka.

The doctor, Associate Professor Rafiqul Islam, was also found working in an unhygienic room, prompting the prime minister to instruct the hospital authorities to take immediate action against him, Assistant Press Secretary KM Nazmul Haque said.

During his visit this afternoon, the prime minister inspected different departments of the hospital and observed the working environment of doctors and other health workers, as well as the institution’s overall cleanliness.

He found Rafiqul Islam smoking in his room and noticed that the room was not properly maintained.

Expressing strong displeasure over the incident and the unhygienic conditions at a major healthcare institution dedicated to children, Tarique Rahman immediately instructed the Chairman of the hospital’s Board of Management, Prof Dr AKM Azizul Haque, to take action against the doctor.

Following the prime minister’s instruction, Dr Rafiqul Islam was placed under temporary suspension.

The prime minister also stressed the importance of maintaining a hygienic environment, ensuring cleanliness and making sure that doctors and other staff performed their duties responsibly.
