Narsingdi: Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has said the highest-ever financial grant for celebrating Durga Puja has been provided this year since Bangladesh’s independence.
“Sarees have been distributed among underprivileged people on the occasion of Durga Puja. Law enforcement agencies are maintaining heightened vigilance to ensure that the celebrations are held peacefully and joyfully,” he said.
The minister made the remarks at an exchange of views with members of the Hindu community at Tamakanda village in Monohardi upazila of Narsingdi on the occasion of Sharadiya Durga Puja.
Sakhawat said BNP leaders and activists were also standing beside members of the Hindu community and extending their cooperation to ensure the smooth celebration of the country’s largest religious festival for Hindus.
He described the BNP as a non-communal political party and said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also believed in non-communal values.
“Under his leadership, the government is working to take Bangladesh forward by ensuring peaceful coexistence among people of all faiths,” the minister said.
He added that the government had always stood beside the Hindu community and would continue to do so in the future.
Sakhawat said a non-communal Bangladesh could be built by ensuring peaceful coexistence among people irrespective of religion or caste, alongside mutual respect and communal harmony.
Belabo upazila BNP Convener Ahsan Habib Biplob chaired the meeting, while Monohardi upazila BNP Member Secretary Aminur Rahman Sarker Dolon moderated it.
Belabo upazila BNP Member Secretary MA Qader Jalil, Monohardi municipal BNP Member Secretary Advocate Abdul Hannan Mia, upazila BNP member Golam Mostofa, Monohardi Puja Celebration Front President Rajib Roy and its General Secretary Sukomal Modhok, among others, attended the meeting.
After the meeting, the minister distributed financial assistance from his personal fund among the presidents and general secretaries of 80 Durga Puja mandaps in Monohardi and Belabo upazilas.
