Bangladesh and Uzbekistan have discussed the possibility of signing a free trade agreement (FTA) to expand bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation.

The issue was discussed at a meeting between State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Uzbekistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Aloyev Bakhromjon Juraboyevich in Baghdad on Sunday (October 18).

According to a press release, Humaiun Kobir received the Uzbek deputy foreign minister on the sidelines of the 52nd Council of Foreign Ministers meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The two sides discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, air connectivity and tourism. They also explored opportunities to enhance business-to-business contacts and support each other in multilateral forums.

Both sides considered a potential free trade agreement as a way to deepen economic ties and create new opportunities for businesses in the two countries.

Humaiun Kobir is leading the Bangladesh delegation to the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, which is being held in Baghdad on October 17–18.

He delivered Bangladesh’s statement at the council’s plenary session on Saturday.
