Maha Ashtami, one of the most significant days of the Sharadiya Durga Puja, is being celebrated across Bangladesh on Monday with religious fervour and devotion.
Kumari Puja, a major attraction of the day, will be held at Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission Dhaka in the capital’s Gopibagh at 9:30am, according to the puja schedule.
During the ritual, an unmarried girl, generally aged between one and 16, is worshipped as a living embodiment of Goddess Durga and the divine feminine.
The tradition reflects reverence for womanhood and the motherly aspect of the divine.
Maha Ashtami is also marked by devotees offering floral tributes to the goddess and participating in special prayers. Sandhi Puja, another important ritual of Durga Puja, takes place at the transition between Ashtami and Navami.
Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community, is being celebrated across the country through prayers, rituals and festivities.
The celebrations will conclude with Bijoya Dashami on Wednesday, October 21, when devotees bid farewell to Goddess Durga through immersion of idols.
