Bangladesh and the Maldives are in the final stage of concluding a prisoner transfer agreement that will allow Bangladeshi inmates serving sentences in Maldivian prisons to return home to serve the remainder of their terms on humanitarian grounds.

The Bangladesh High Commission in the Maldives said in a statement on Friday that the authorities of both countries are working closely to finalize the agreement. Once the remaining formalities are completed, the deal is expected to be signed and implemented soon.

The agreement is expected to strengthen legal and humanitarian cooperation between the two countries while supporting the rehabilitation and social reintegration of prisoners.

Meanwhile, a delegation led by Bangladesh High Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Nazmul Islam recently visited Maafushi Prison to assess the welfare of Bangladeshi inmates.

The delegation met all 44 Bangladeshi prisoners currently held at the prison. Of them, 34 have been convicted and are serving various prison terms, while 10 are awaiting trial.

Delegation members spoke individually with the inmates and reviewed their access to healthcare, food, clothing, accommodation and overall prison conditions.

During a meeting with Maldivian prison authorities, the delegation raised the inmates’ concerns and requested that their entitled facilities and services be ensured without delay.

After the visit, High Commissioner Nazmul Islam said ensuring the dignity and fundamental rights of every Bangladeshi citizen abroad is part of the government’s responsibility, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare, protection and dignity of expatriate Bangladeshis.
