Bangladesh have been fined five per cent of their players’ match fees by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining a slow over-rate in their opening match of the ODI tri-series against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi.

The ICC announced the sanction on Monday, October 19, after Bangladesh were found to have bowled one over short of the required rate in Saturday’s match, even after time allowances were taken into account.

Stand-in captain Towhid Hridoy pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by David Gilbert of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. As a result, no formal hearing was required.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are fined five per cent of their players’ match fees for each over they fail to bowl within the allotted time.

Bangladesh suffered a 99-run defeat against Zimbabwe in the opening match. Chasing a target of 272, they were dismissed for 172 in 33.4 overs.

Bangladesh are scheduled to face Afghanistan in their final league match of the tri-series on October 21, with the top two teams advancing to the final on October 23.
