Real Madrid’s decision to spend a club-record 140 million euros ($157 million) to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig was driven by the 19-year-old winger’s potential to become one of football’s biggest stars, a prospect he began to demonstrate at the 2026 World Cup.
Diomande has started showing glimpses of that promise in recent matches, scoring a spectacular long-range goal against Sevilla on Sunday ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with his former club Leipzig.
However, his potential was not the only factor behind Madrid’s decision to make such a substantial investment. Club president Florentino Perez had promised fans during his re-election campaign in June that he would spend a similar amount to bring in a new star as the Spanish giants sought to rebuild after two trophyless seasons.
Diomande had impressed during his single season in Germany after emerging at Spanish club Leganes. But his arrival did not address an obvious gap in Madrid’s squad. Instead, it added to an already crowded attack.
On the same day Diomande’s transfer was announced, Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior signed a new contract with Madrid until 2032.
Madrid had struggled last season to find the right balance when Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius played together. Integrating another high-profile attacking player with a record price tag was always likely to present further challenges.
Diomande has consequently needed time to establish himself in the Spanish capital. Although he has displayed flashes of quality, he has yet to become an indispensable member of coach Jose Mourinho’s side.
His progress, however, is becoming increasingly evident.
Diomande scored his first goal for Madrid against Villarreal on October 10, securing a 1-0 victory. Yet the match was overshadowed by Vinicius’s dismissal and subsequent four-match suspension, which opened up more opportunities for the young winger.
Diomande started on the left wing in Sunday’s 4-1 demolition of Sevilla, producing his strongest performance for the club so far. Besides scoring a superb long-range goal late in the match, he provided the assist for Arda Guler’s opener.
He now has two goals and three assists in 11 appearances across all competitions.
“He has a lot to improve, he’s young, he’s still naive, he’s still not the finished article,” Mourinho said after Sunday’s match.
“At Real Madrid, the demands are very high … but he had a great game, he’s growing.”
Motivated by personal tragedy
Diomande has faced considerable challenges throughout his career, both on and off the pitch.
After leaving Ivory Coast to attend school in Florida, the winger struggled to secure opportunities with Major League Soccer clubs Charlotte FC and Colorado Rapids.
His senior debut eventually came for Leganes against Real Madrid in March 2025. He scored twice in 10 appearances for the Spanish club, earning a move to Leipzig.
In Germany, Diomande helped Leipzig qualify for the Champions League, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists. He was also named Bundesliga Rookie of the Year before completing his move to Madrid.
The winger has said that personal tragedy continues to drive his ambition. His 15-year-old sister, Roxane, died in 2025 after her drink was spiked, according to an open letter Diomande published in The Players’ Tribune in June.
“You were the one who always believed that I could be the next Cristiano (Ronaldo), when everybody else laughed,” he wrote to his late sister.
“You were telling everybody, ‘My brother is going to be the greatest in the world’. I will prove that you were right, or I will die trying.”
At the home of the 15-time European champions, Diomande now has a platform to pursue that ambition.
Mourinho believes the teenager can continue to develop, particularly in his finishing and ability to create goals for teammates.
“He has to improve his finishing … assist better … but that will come,” the coach said.
“I remember when Vinicius arrived (and struggled), and in two or three years Vinicius was a top drawer player.”
With Vinicius available for European competition despite his domestic suspension, Diomande will hope to earn another opportunity against Leipzig on Wednesday as Madrid seek their third consecutive victory in the Champions League.
