US cancels over 300,000 visas under Trump admin

The administration of US President Donald Trump has revoked more than 300,000 visas issued to foreign nationals, citing violations of law, fraud and threats to national security, the US State Department has said.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott announced the figure in a post on social media platform X on Tuesday, October 20.

Pigott said the administration had cancelled visas at a faster pace than any previous administration.

He stressed that the United States would show no leniency towards foreign nationals who violate laws, commit fraud or undermine national security while staying in the country on visas.

The administration will continue taking such measures to secure US borders and protect national security, he added.

According to the State Department, the number of revoked visas had exceeded 175,000 by August.

In January, the department had reported cancelling more than 100,000 visas, describing the figure as a record at the time.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has tightened its visa issuance policies, including closer scrutiny of applicants’ social media activities and expanded security checks.
